Yours Truly Interviewed on “Dear Stephen King”

Hi everyone, I got into writing this blog because, well, I love pubs, but I also love blogs. I read heaps of them. Art blogs, sport blog, health, comics, graffiti…let’s just say that chances are if I’m not in a pub then I’m in front of my computer reading blogs. So I was stoked when Shan, author of Dear Stephen King, approached me for an interview. To quote Shan on why she writes Dear Stephen King: “I love to engage with literature – with the ideas, emotions and human experience captured in words on print. ‘DearStephenKing’ is a channel for all the thoughts swimming around in my little head regarding the various books I read. Stephen King happens to be one of my favourite authors, though by no means will my ramblings be...

The Post Office Hotel – Pride of Coburg

The Post Office Hotel – Pride of Coburg

I don’t get out Coburg way very much. It’s not that I have anything against it, it’s more that I don’t really have much call to head in that direction. I did a quick quiz with my mates and it turns out I’m not alone. There is rarely a reason for us to head any further north than Brunswick or Northcote (and even then my friends from the East and South rarely make it that far). This is a shame because Coburg is home to some really great pubs. The Post Office Hotel is a perfect example. I probably still wouldn’t have known about the Post Office if it hadn’t been for one of my favorite bands playing there last winter. The gig was awesome and I remember thinking the it was a perfect pub night: the band went off, the crowd were really into them, it was a...

The National Hotel Is Back

The National Hotel Is Back

As promised, Brooke and I went to the soft opening of the new National Hotel in Richmond last night. It’s not totally complete yet, but we really dig what they’ve done to the place, especially the spacious deck and beer garden, which has become the focal point of the pub’s design. A couple of Richmond locals were at the bar when we arrived and got talking about the pub’s previous life.  Already fans of the new look, they believed this renovation was the best thing that had ever happened to the place. I hope to catch up with one of the owners in the coming weeks and report back with a full article, but in the meantime I want to confirm that The National is definitely open for business and encourage everyone to show support for this new venture by checking...

The National Hotel – Reopening Today.

The National Hotel – Reopening Today.

Back in November I published a quick post when I noticed that The National Hotel in Richmond was closed for re-development. Well, word on the street is that it is having a “soft opening” today! Brooke and I went a little out of our way on the weekend to check on how the renos were going. To me it still looked like a construction site but Brooke started talking to one of the builders who told us it would be opening its doors this Wednesday (today). Later that night we were having dinner with some friends who told us they knew one of the new owners. Turns out I’m not alone in noticing that this corner of Richmond is having a massive apartment boom. The eastern end of Victoria Street (between Church Street and Victoria Gardens) is, well, unremarkable to say the...

Friday Links for the Modern Drinker

Welcome to the first Friday of 2012. Here are today’s links for your reading pleasure. Looking for something to get the for that special lady in your life? Check out this post from The Beer Wench on beer jewellery. Check out this beer cocktail from beermixology… Waste of a good beer, or brilliant idea? In December I reviewed the newly opened Temple Brewery in Brunswick. They now have their website up and running. Looks like superparma.com is getting a makeover. I’m can’t wait to see what the new site looks like. I used to plan my drinking around their recommendations. That’s it. I’m back in Melbourne now and have several blog posts in the works. Make sure you’re signed up on Facebook or Twitter so you’re the first to know when they’re...
